Integrated Governance Programme II : Strengthening Democratic Governance, Rule of Law and Human Rights in the Maldives

Summary of Intergrated Governance Programme

The Maldives is a young democracy attempting to build on consolidate economic and human development gains but simultaneously still challenged by deep socioeconomic, environmental and political issues. While key achievements have occurred in the recent years in democratic governance, important challenges remain particularly with regard to issues of strengthening participation, transparency, accountability and rights based approach to development as well as mainstreaming environmental sustainability.

The Integrated Governance Programme aims to build a resilient and peaceful democratic society through effective and accountable governance institutions, promote their sustainability, strengthen capacity of civil society to meaningfully participate in the public life and improve social cohesion and human security for all people of the Maldives. It will merge ongoing and planned democratic governance projects supported by UNDP Maldives in a comprehensive framework that will generate close synergies between various activities, support deepening democracy and strengthen the country’s democratic transition in the context of an evolving democracy.

Activities will enable increased voice and citizen participation for more effective and inclusive governance system and enhanced access to justice and protection of human rights. Using a human rights- based approach the framework will provide a means to improve capacities of key institutions in the country through targeted capacity building and the provision of a platform for decision making on development priorities. In doing so, the programme also seeks to empower women and youth, and enhance their participation in public life.
