Visit of Mr. Haoliang Xu to Maldives
Mr. Haoliang Xu, the UNDP’s United Nations Assistant Secretary-General, Chair, United Nations Development Group Asia-Pacific and UNDP Assistant Administrator & Director, Regional Bureau for Asia and the Pacific visited the Maldives from 13 - 14 February 2014.
During the visit, Mr. Xu held high-level meetings with senior officials of the Maldivian government including His Excellency President Yameen Abdul Gayoom, Minister of Foreign Affairs Honorable Ms. Dhunya Maumoon and Technical Advisor to Minister of Finance and Treasury, Mr. Arif Hilmy. During the meetings, Mr. Xu highlighted on the UNDP’s role and support on the ongoing projects that are currently being carried out in partnership with the government.
Mr. Xu also visited the community of Kaafu Atoll Huraa Island, where he met with the Island’s Island Council and the Women’s Development Committee (WDC), and discussed about the key developmental challenges faced by the island community. He also discussed on the innovative solutions devised by the islanders Public Private Partnership.
He also inspected an ongoing small-grants project by the UNDP Maldives that is being implemented in the island, through the Mangroves for the Future (MFF) small grants facility. The principal focus of the project titled “Environmental Valuation of Huraa Mangrove: A case study of Ecological, Social & Economic Perspectives" is on ecosystem services and their valuation as there is a dearth of scientific research on mangroves in the Maldivian context and how they affect the wellbeing of the local community. Mr. Xu also visited a traditional handicraft workshop that was established with UNDP assistance, a local house to see small-scale home-gardening and hydroponics and the waste disposal site as well as staff housings of nearby resorts.
