POLICY AND INCLUSIVE GROWTH: Maldives has achieved significant economic growth over the past decade. Despite these achievements, there are a number of critical factors that are posing considerable risks to the socio-economic situation of the country, such as rising unemployment, especially among youth and women, increasing income disparities, the current global economic downturn, and national macroeconomic imbalances.
UNDP advocates for nationally-owned solutions and helps to make them more effective by ensuring a greater voice for poor and vulnerable communities. UNDP aims to expand access to productive assets and economic opportunities, and link programmes with the country’s economic and financial policies, to achieve equitable growth and sustainable development.more
Projects and Initiatives
With the main objective to strengthen economic resilience of island communities and vulnerable groups including women and youth, this project builds on the first phase of Support to Integrated Farming Project (2008-2010) during which innovative and environment friendly agriculture technologies were successfully set up in eight community islands.more
The project focuses on strengthening opportunities for economic diversification and employment creation, and on creating an enabling environment for Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) to expand opportunities for integration of local livelihoods into the private sector and the tourism industry. more
The project aims to strengthen the capacity of national institutions and actors for evidence based policy formulation, development planning, and Managing for Development Results (MfDR) through the application of the Human Development (HD) concept in shaping up policies and programs that keep people at the center of national development.more
